Attention Ladies And Gentleman, A Song By Press Return
I recently got to do an interview with Pierce and Josh, the dynamic duo that is Press Return. This emo-ish indie outfit from New Paltz, NY is booking a tour with Tiger of Paris from December 29 to January 7th.
Press Return's unique stripped down "six strings and vocal chords" approach to their music is beginning to attract attention, recently even landing them a spot in the Small Band Round Up on AbsolutePunk.net.
If you have yet to scope out these guys, I recommend that you visit their Myspace music page and give "People Who Mattered" a listen. That, along with this short interview, should provide you with a perfect introduction into the world of this promising indie rock band.
SMB: Alright, first off we gotta talk about the tour. Press Return is booking a tour with Tiger in Paris for the end of December/early January. Are you guys excited to get out on the road soon?
Pierce: I am so excited. This will be my first tour ever and I'm good friends with the Tiger in Paris guys so it should be a pretty awesome time.
Josh: Yeah, I'm extremely excited. This has been a dream come true as trite as that may sound.
SMB: What do you guys expect out of the upcoming shows. Are there any certain venues that you are looking foward to especially?
Josh: I expect to lose a lot of money and I hope to at least get one person to say "Hey, these guys aren't too bad."
Pierce: I'm with Josh on the losing money front. But really I just want people to hear us. I just want people to take a little notice. This is everything I've ever wanted to do. As for certain venues, I'm hoping that they call back. We've been having a little trouble because both bands are so small. But I really want to play at Arlene's Grocery in NYC.
Josh: However much money we lose is totally worth it.
SMB: Have either of you guys done a tour of this size before?
Pierce: Nope. I've played show packed weekends but never anything out of state.
Josh: Back when I was U2's drummer, we did something like this. But since then nothing of this magnitude.
SMB: What are you expecting in terms of crowd turn out? Are you expecting any especially large shows?
Pierce: I hope we get a few kids there for us every night. Tiger in Paris is a little bigger than us so we hope to pull in a new audience. Nothing will be that big though I don't think.
Josh: I'm playing music so I'm having fun no matter what. I hope that enough kids come to the show so that everyone has a good time.
SMB: What reaction are you guys anticipating from the audience? How would you describe the 'perfect show' in terms of a Press Return show?
Pierce: Wow, this is a tough one. Right now the perfect show would be one where people just know the words and sing along. That would be a perfect show for me. Someone i don't know, knowing the words I've written.
Josh: We lost a talent show to a juggler. But we've also been open mic night favorites so everyday is pretty much fifty-fifty for me.
SMB: Now for the hardcore fans. Where can we find any 'Tortoise Beats Hare' or 'Ponies for Strangers' songs?
Pierce: Well as for Ponies For Strangers, you can go to www.myspace.com/poniesforstrangers. We were a bad pop-punk band. I've gotten a lot better since then but those kids are some of my closest friends. There is one song on there that I've contemplated making into a Press Return song. It's called "Tiger, Tiger"
Josh: Unfortunately, TBH never made it out of the basement. We never got a drummer so it ended up just being three great friends writing music for the love of music. Those were some of the greatest days of my life.
SMB: In your Myspace music profile, you mention the late author Ernest Hemmingway under your influences. So tell me, which one of you guys is the bookworm?
Josh: The song "Pass Me By," is loosely based around Hemmingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" interjected with a lot of personal subject matter. That song will always mean a lot to me and so does literature. I wish I had time to read more.
Pierce: This a great question. Both of us are pretty well read for the most part. I read a lot more old science fiction stories. I love Kurt Vonnegut and Aldous Huxley. I always think that it's always good to hear stories in different mediums and I think that's why we use so many allusions in our work.
SMB: You also mention Yo! MTV Raps... Care to elaborate?
Josh: Will Smith is the man!
Pierce: That's just a joke. It was mentioned on TV one day. We thought it would be a good idea. We do love Jay-Z though.
Josh: Independence Day blew my mind, though.
SMB: Anything you'd like to share for us that you feel we skipped over? any final thoughts?
Pierce: I don't think you skipped over anything really. I've been interviewed my Newsday before and this was a much more thorough interview. HOE is really great for doing this and I'm very thankful.
Josh: This is really great. I'm so glad that people have taken an interest in my heart and soul also known as my music. Thank you very much.
