New Guide to Emo, Out In Book Form

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Everybody Hurts, the Essential Guide to Emo Culture hit book stores early last month, much to the delight of hopeless emo kid wannabes everywhere.

Without even reading it I can tell you what it's about. The book basically attempts to ride the popularity of the Hipster Handbook, the "Indie Fashion" predecessor to all these underground lifestyle guides that are now arriving at a bookstore near you.

Presumably laying down the core tenets of emo behavior, the different kinds of emo kids you'll encounter (and can therefore fashion yourself after) and "non-conforming" teen hairstyle ideas, this book tries it's best to categorize the uncategorizable.

Imagine buying a guide on "how to be cool". If you have to buy a book, you're not. The emo song is cool. Those ubiquitous emo cartoons, Pon & Zi, are cool. A book on how to be emo is, for lack of a better term, NOT COOL.

I say all this dispite sporting ravishing illustrations by a well known t-shirt designer whom I'm too embarrassed to mention here.

This marks yet another milestone in the devolution and mass commercialization of our great emo nation. There's obviously something corporate about needing to confirm your emo identity through the apparatus of someone else's shallow characterization, or brushing yourself up on the identities of your emo friends behind their backs instead of just asking them. Besides that, we all know that there is only one definitive guide to emo, and that's us.

Tell me you see the contradiction here. In an effort to make a mockery of emo, the book winds up making a mockery of itself. I know it's not very scene of me to promote garbage like this, but if you must, you can bypass the bookstore backlog and buy it straight from Amazon. You'll want to read the reviews first though.

Personally, I give this book negative bazillion scene points by virtue of it's existence.

Only posers would read this stupid book. I read the hipster handbook and it rocks. This books is a worthless ripoff.

I have to come up with my own opinion. I figured it'd suck to begin with, but then again curiosity killed the cat, so maybe it'll kill me too.

what they made a book on how to be emo thats effin degrading
May 23, 2007 | Unregistered Commenteremo pale kid
that is degrading! i cant believe someone would make a book on how to be "emo". you cant just BE or BECOME emo. you just ARE a person that listens to a TYPE of music that so happens to be labeled as EMO. i bet that there is a part about self-injury in there too, cuz for some reason, everyone thinks that "emo" people cut themselves. i can just see it...."...and to cut yourself you need to have a very sharp razor or knife, then find that very thick vein either on you lower wrist or the deep vein on you upper arm and carefully, but quickly push down on the knife/razor while pulling towards you at the same time. then, you remove the weapon and let yourself bleed until the blood dries. then wash the excess blood and sneakily show off your cut to your friends, acting suprized that they saw it when they ask about it. then, very calmly say,'it is just a little cut. no harm or anything. just had to get my emotional feelings out. dont worry im fine........no, no i dont need to go to the hospital for stitches because i cut off a "tiny" blood vein.'"

god, i hate people sometimes. i think im gonna go to sleep or something. bye everyone that is supportive of my thoughts.

id get y ppl r getting so worked up over a book. I think its funny that someone wrote a book about emo culture. And the ppl who say "i dont need a book 2 be emo" your just trying to rub it in other ppls faces that ur more emo than them. its lik its a competion to be more emo. y cant all the emos just gett along???
May 27, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterRose
Everyone does realize that this book is meant as a joke, right?
June 1, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterPierce
well, i kinda get it, but still....

and i agree with Rose cuz its seems to me that "emo" people are not getting along anymore.

the only thing i have 2 disagree w/u guys about is the fact that emo is a type of music, not a style(like i said in my previous post). i mean, i hate that people are making it into a completely different steriotype these days. they (they=kids at school) think that if ur "emo" u have a certain way of dressing, you hair is a certain way, u listen to a certain type of music, ur ALWAYS sad and depressed, and u cut urself. HELLO PEOPLE!!! are we gonna give into them? emo is the music. a way of life. the whole thing is, scene people are taking over and calling themselves emo. they arent! they are a steriotype and we are emo.

so, do u guys get it now? have a great day eeveryone. this will i think be my last post on this computer. i will start posting on my home computer cuz i gotta turn this one in 2day at school. bye.

honestly,
i don't think you should judge a book if you haven't read it.
and it's not ACTUALLY a guide.
like
"step 1. cry"
or anything like that.
it's humourous, without making fun of scene kids.
i think we all need to be able to laugh at ourselves once in a while.

A book on how to be emo???
a book that tells people how to form their identity based on the new fashions sucks, where's the diversity? i formed my own identidy based on what i like, not on what the media tells me

since when was the emo song cool?
June 14, 2007 | Unregistered Commenterminge_man
wellz lets see...if u needa read a book to tell u how to be then obviously u have no idea how to form ur own identity...i do as i want not as others say....i dress the way i feel comfortable n if thats in "emo attire" wellz then that wot it is...so if u needa read the book just to do as it says so u can walk around n say "hey im emo" then obvoulsy ur retarded...dress the way u feel comfortable, style ur hair the way u feel comfortable n listen to the music u lyk...dont read a book bcos u decide that u wanna be an emo...it just doesnt work lyk that bcos soon people will see through the fabricated layers of ur image n then u will just be a loser!!!

this book is written for the tweens....13-15 year olds who have kno decided they want to be emo.

i kno this youung girl n 2 years ago she was a little princess idolising Paris Hilton and Linddsay Lohan n i saw her a few weeks ago n she is dressed in black woth slits all up her arm...n she comes up to me n she says "How many slits do u have up ur arm?" n i was lyk "None" bcos i dont slit mii wrist i find other ways of using mii emotions n she says "Well i have fifteen so i am more emo than u...ur not emo bcos u dont slit ur wrists" now this girl is lyk 15 n i so yer this is prob mii biggest beef bcos okay i am 16 n i have been emo for lyk 8 years now but only once did i ever put a blade to mii wrist....n then u have these little wannabes walkin around who are basing their emoness on how many slits they have on their wrists n that they are more emo if they have 20 slits opposed to sumone who has 15 slits.

anywaiiz mii point is that this book is for all the little try hards who really wanna be emo just to make a point not bcos they are emo...bcos if they were they wuld be able to forge the identity on their own...the way they want it to be!!!

this is great!
i am going to read this.
it is true "emo kids" don't get along
and the scene kids... don't get me started.
i got my septum pierced 4 months ago
some guy i was nice to (i had shared my weed with him on 2 other occasions) was with another guy with his septum pierced and a group of kids i had met before
i am asked to come over by a friend in the group
the one who has his septum asks me how long ago i got mine, i reply "4 months"
cue a tirade against me on how i am a try hard wannabe scene emo kid etcetc.
im thinking. wtf man, i have wanted this piercing since i was like 9. im 14 now . WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? ME TO GET IT DONE WHEN IM 10!
i was to inebriated to fight back, but this same boy has 3 times tried to bash my friend, and hit him, because he is a 'Emo Kid" for wearing low slung skinnies.
this boy wears the same jeans and has snakebites and a septum.
FUCKING ARSEHOLE
but. people judge merely on appearances.
with the cutting thing. again. i cut myself rather a lot, from 9-13. people have asked me such questions as do you cut, your emo you must, and my response is, used to, EMO music stopped me. now fuck off.
and if people could get what emo/screamo music is RIGHT for once.
well, its hard to define, but a better definition than alexisonfire, atreyu, SLIPKNOT
i dont know much about emo, not a big fan, but screamo... circle takes the square, pg.99, saetia, you know the shit.
i've whinged enough. feel free to contact me and sorry about the drug referances in this thingamy.
to some people,, they enjoy being part of the appearance. i get countless blonde supre punk girls talking to me, or saying I KNOW YOU OF MYSPACE! what is this about, having as many myspace friends as possible? like the scene kid (insert how many thousand number of friends here)k!
shit.

salve,
(hello in latin)(no im not a "nerd", my buddie writes in latin to me althetime)

i personally think that being emo isnt a fashion, or hairstyle, or even cutting yourself, its a feeling.
I am emo and have been since third grade. (im 15 now, and in my sophmore year of h.s.)Its pretty tough, whene you feel like you cant tell any1 about how you feel about the world, I almost comitted suicide several times. Anyway,, ,,, ,, this whole book idea was retarded, and it shouldnt have been published,
I already get hella pissed at all the posers who started copying us emos like they are depressed too, now itll only get worse.
